edward leigh is saddened by proposed closure of raf scampton sir edward leigh, the member of parliament for the gainsborough constituency, where raf scampton is located, has been saddened by the announcement by the ministry of defence at plans to close the base, he said: “i am saddened by news from the ministry of defence that raf scampton is to be sold off as part of cost-saving measures. “the base is home to the world-famous raf aerobatic team, the red arrows, the mobile meteorological unit and no. 1 air control centre. with over six-hundred personnel working on the base, including service personnel, contractors and civil servants, the planned closure will have a significant impact on local people and economy.” the base opened in october 1916 as air station brattleby cliff before it was renamed in 1918, making it one of the raf oldest stations. in 1956 the runway was extended by 10,000 feet to allow for the operation of vulcan bombers. in 2000, after five years at raf cranwell, the red arrows returned to the base. sir edward continued: “i have worked tirelessly over the decades to support the historic legacy of 617 squadron ‘the dambusters’ to ensure that their contribution is never forgotten. “i know that the future of raf bases is always a concern and i have been working with, and will continue to work with, colleagues on both west lindsey district council and lincolnshire county council to ensure that whatever the future holds for raf scampton it has a bright future. “i will work to persuade the ministry that the base can still retain an raf function in the future. should that not be possible perhaps there are civilian uses for the base. i am aware that when the barracks at grantham faced closure it required significant efforts to put in place transitional arrangements. a masterplan for the base at raf scampton could cost millions of pounds to pull together and could form part of any greater lincolnshire growth deal.” posted by edward conservative mp for gainsborough, has called for west lindsey district council to look into building an outdoor natural swimming pool at market rasen. popular on the continent, natural swimming pools often feature aquatic plants in addition to chemical-free filtration systems that are better for the environment. “there is strong demand for a pool,” sir edward pointed out in his letter to west lindsey district council, “with over five hundred residents signing a petition calling for one.” the mp acknowledged the cost of construction, maintenance, and staffing for an indoor pool at market rasen’s new leisure centre is significant and suggested a natural swimming pool as an alternative. “this innovative solution has proved successful elsewhere,” sir edward said. “at combloux in france, for example, their natural swimming pool is pure, clear, and free from chemicals. the need for active maintenance in this model is significantly less than a conventional pool as well as being far more out yesterday show that more people are in work than ever before. in the gainsborough constituency, the number of people claiming the key out of work benefits has fallen by 574 – a thirty-two per cent drop – since 2010. meanwhile,the level of employment has increased in the east midlands with 2,406,408 people in work – an increase of 263,502 more people in work since 2010. sir edward leigh, the conservative mp for gainsborough, has welcomed the new figures that show unemployment is at a forty-year low and that the number of young people out of work has fallen by 140 people on average every day under the conservatives. sir edward commented: “under the conservatives a record number of people are now in work as unemployment continues to fall to record lows. and with wages rising faster than prices, paypackets can go further. “that means more people have the security of a job and are able to provide for their families. we want to do more to deliver more well-paid jobs, which is why
